| Sunday 11th February - Wimbledon - Under 1600cc London Open Report by BangerBash Around 150 cars for this years London Open with visitors from Autospeed, Buxton, GMP, Incarace, Mendips, PRI, RDC, TSR, Fleet, Horndean, Layhams and Smallfield. The pits were dominated by Bluebird’s and Primera’s. The most hardcore motors on show was the Nissan Cherry braved by 660 Fredrica Wilson and 740 Daniel Waite in a Sirocco. Other unusual motors for the meeting was 133 Dick Harmsworth Escort Mk5 Estate and 152 Rob Broughton’s Orion. Onto the real material and 25 Mark Thomas and 174 Simon Jaycock had used Capri’s while 13 Clyde Williams and 43 Bart Varsmissen paraded smart fresh ones. Cortina Mk5’s were in the hands of 379 Adrian Clifton, 901 Mike Hale and 959 Aaron Keoghan. 618 Fred Kinsella and 867 James Morris had pretty Mk3 Cortinas while topping them was the mega rare FSO Estate from Tommy Anderson and 368 Mark Annetts had an A60 Camper. Heat 1 had a bumper field of 42 cars out and there were plenty of spinouts to start the evening 45 Anthony Crowshaw (Sierra Est) hit 107 Shane Thompson over the back wheel and 13 Mean and Moody nailed Lips. A few more cars tangled up including 368 Mark Annetts which caused the camper to roll on its side and bring out the reds just before Lips turned it round for a head on to 47 Peter Corbett (Sunny). On the restart a few cars spun out on turn 3 including Clyde Williams and he received a t-bone from 822 Luke Dawson. 27 Tommy Anderson used the FSO to attack 334 Barry Williams as 450 Glyn Platts gave the latter a big length of the straight hit. The red flags then came out for a stray wheel on the track. 244 Michael Bunyan led Anderson into the fence on the restart while 54 Alan Cartwright (Primera), 264 Mark Welland and 450 Glyn Platts were having a cracking race for second while 295 Graham Heywood was well out in the lead and took the win ahead of eventual second Winnie and and third Wellard. 1st: 295-Graham Heywood, 2nd-54, 3rd-264, 4th-4, 5th-814, 6th-937, 7th-33, 8th-502, 9th-903 Heat 2 had 36 cars out and 740 Daniel Waite (Sirocco) attacked 147 Barry Fuller while 30 Darren Worsley (Corolla) lunged at 348 Sonny Sherwood (Primera) taking him out. 277 Gavin Perryman fenced 137 Paul Tagg’s Primera while 731 Craig Hawkins did likewise to 791 Aaron Rowland. Mushy avenged his attack by taking out Worsley before shunting 58 Greg Stevens (Cav Mk3) out of the way. 315 Jason Ayles (Cav Mk2) landed a blow on 204 Charlie Callard (Carina II) before 46 Keith Painter (Primera) also weighed in on the latter. 340 Colin Jones took the win with a big lead ahead of 99 Richie Ahern and 30 Darren Worsley in a fairly quiet race. 1st: 340-Colin Jones, 2nd-99, 3rd-30, 4th-456, 5th-315, 6th-894, 7th-311, 8th-75, 9th-826, 10th-348 A glitch in Spedeworth’s math’s caused only 26 cars for Heat 3 and 71 Ciran Carton put away 51 Simon Heilds before 824 Tom Murrell t-boned Carton. Things went pretty quiet before 455 Ricky Finney followed in 65 Peter Giles (Sunny) flat out. Finney then nailed 171 James Simpson (Primera Est) before having an apparent black flag for the follow in which he chose to ignore and got loaded. 455 Luke Cornish (Cav Mk2) hammered 411 Danny Smithson (Primera) then a couple of laps later 169 Lenny Brinkley (Primera) took out the former. In the closing stages 824 Tom Murrell spun himself out and Lenny Boy nailed him over the back wheel as 194 Steve Anscombe took the win ahead of 830 Christian Finch and 468 Colin Quinnell. 1st: 194-Steve Anscombe, 2nd-830, 3rd-468, 4th-478, 5th-297, 6th-469, 7th-169, 8th-36, 9th-455 Heat 4 saw the numbers rise back to 40 cars and 404 Luke Brinton (Primera) wasted no time in delivering a massive follow in to 117 Steve Charlesworth on turn 1 with 772 Simon Byrne (Primera) behind Spook causing him to roll. At the same time as this down the other end saw 901 Mike Hale (Cortina Mk5) nailed 959 Aaron Keoghan’s similar motor before Marty Eighteen trashed Hale with a huge t-bone. The restart saw 717 Tony Green lead 201 John Dodge (both Primeras) into the fence as 379 Adrian Clifton nailed 174 Simon Jaycock in an all RWD affair. 151 Darren Berry was put in by 713 Tom Downes (Carina Est) and 702 James Dodge gave the Worm a stiff hit. 713 Tom Downes then picked up 533 Sid Hertzog who latched onto 240 Lee Bufton and slammed them both into the fence. The Rev uncharacteristically nailed Mike Hales long empty car while Jimbo wrapped up the action by putting 405 Neil Cornish’ superbly turned out Sunny away. 415 Chez Selvador took the win ahead of 197 Pete Dodge and 772 Simon Byrne. 1st: 415-Chez Selvador, 2nd-197, 3rd-772, 4th-747, 5th-614, 6th-258, 7th-80, 8th-717, 9th-702 Consolation 1 drew a big grid of 45 cars and Mushy started things off by nailing Lips as 204 Charlie Callard made a beeline for 114 Glen Beevis. Waspy nailed Spudguns’ A60 flat out while at the turn 1 Gonzo fired 210 Paul Barnes into 47 Peter Corbett. 528 Alan Hunt placed 822 Luke Dawson into the fence before 879 Danny Evans picked up Waspy and guided him into 222 Matt Logan (Primera). The red flags then came out for Baby Bunny who had rolled over (although unseen by me). On the restart 277 Gavin Perryman put in big hits on both 210 Paul Barnes and 333 Chris Golding. Mushy then popped the Cherry of Fredrica Wilson just before 53 Sparkster attacked Perryman. Mushy took the win this time well ahead of Barnes and 58 Greg Stevens with only 4 finishers this time. 1st: 348-Sonny Sherwood, 2nd-210, 3rd-58, 4th-204, nof The second Consolation had 41 cars in it and 146 Danny Wigman nailed 44 Rob Broughton Snr (Primera) just before 536 Ryan Cunningham (Cav Mk3) followed in 444 Phil Brookes (Civic) and 133 Dick Harmsworth piled in as well. 670 Richard Flockton (Primera) picked up 735 Wayne Drury (Primera) and followed him into the drivers door of Harmsworth who was unfortunately nearly out of his motor and the red flags came out instantly for the ugly hit. 239 Steve Carter followed in 322 James Newland flat out on the restart and Nemesis rolled on impact while the pack piled into the 239 car. The reds came out again. On the second restart 410 Billy Wells picked up 377 Ashley Tompkins and planted him into Phil Brookes’ empty Civic. Tricky followed in 713 Tom Downes’ Carina Estate that bought out the reds again for Downes who was shook up with his car wedged under the fence. Not many left for the third restart but it saw 25 Mark Thomas put in 34 Ben Large. Jimbo Dodge nailed 715 Timmy Aldridge before Marty Eighteen hammered the former. Just before the end Tombo gave Aldridge a length of the straight hit. 341 Chris Lumm took the win in this one in front of 731 Craig Hawkins and Disco Stu. 1st: 341-Chris Lumm, 2nd-731, 3rd-265, 4th-25, 5th-34, 6th-183, 7th-514, 8th-702 The B-Final managed to raise 21 cars and 828 Chris Niblett (Cav Mk3) gave 252 Boogie a roofbending hit before 706 Danny Lucas jacked Niblett’s Cav big time. 43 Bart Varsmissen then took out Lucas while Jethro and the Worm were having a private DD with a few head ons on turns 3 and 4. Varsmissen then took out 660 Wilson’s Cherry while 236 Robert Everett hit Boogie’s dead car. Jethro nailed the Worm on the home straight on oppo then the latter turned round and they had a solid head on. Maverick took the win in this one ahead of 269 Dean French and 820 Martin Perkins. 1st: 46-Keith Painter, 2nd-269, 3rd-820, 4th-236, 5th-277, nof The A-Final had 41 qualifiers out for it and Jimbo planted 478 Mark Logan into 265 Stu Foster in an all Primera encounter. 717 Tony Green then weighed in on Logan as well. 210 Paul Barnes hit 30 Darren Worsley while 514 Marty Eighteen smashed 33 Matthew Walker into the fence. Jimbo picked up Mushy and followed him in causing the wire to snap. 169 Lenny Brinkley then followed in 34 Ben Large next to Mushy. The lively Marty Eighteen then nailed 502 Kayleigh Dyton before picking up 614 Chris Hide and following him through the wires in a very scary scene and the reds were out instantly for that and Bumble’s motor being in a blaze. Luckily Mr Lossy was fine and got out of his motor to a massive cheer of the crowd. On the restart Nutspeed fired away 814 Mark Barker and 197 Peter Dodge spun out 99 The Cheat. The Cheat got revenge by planting Peter Dodge in the fence only to get nailed by Jimbo. Ahern took exception to this and charged across the infield and came inside out at Peter Dodge who was more than happy to connect with a head on. 456 Nathan Roberts guided his Civil war Primera Estate to the win with 747 Phil Purdy and 4 David Wilde behind that. 1st: 456-Nathan Roberts, 2nd-747, 3rd-4, 4th-264, 5th-469, 6th-894, 7th-117, 8th-468, 9th-197, 10th-772 Around 20 cars returned for the DD and 455 Luke Cornish took stick from 258 Wayne Turner, Boogie and Wildy. 533 Sid Hertzog and 222 Matt Logan had a big head on. 223 Terry Hyson turned round and was going for a big hit but Marty Eighteen led 108 Chris Mansell into a big head on between the 2. Jimbo then gave Hyson a t-bone. 240 Lee Bufton went for a dodgy inside out attack to 747 Phil Purdy before Tony Green nailed the Autospeed man. 820 Martin Perkins hammered Logan as 735 Wayne Drury and Frenchy had a head on. Frenchy then backed off to nail Hyson while on the home straight 503 Dave Matthews turned it round to give Maverick a hard shot who was struggling also on oppo. Bernie fired into Hyson before Wildy finished the latter off giving him length. Perkins and Bernie had a head on and Logan finished off the former. Matthews dished out hits to both Drury and Logan and Wildy t-boned the latter. Matthews and Logan were left to exchange hits and it was Logan who eventually came off as the winner. Last Car Running: 222-Matt Logan Overall it was a quiet start to the meeting that built up in action. Unfortunately the controversial follow ins are sparking a big debate again and Mr Lossy is a very lucky man. Unfortunately the ugly scenes in the bar after certain incidents also taking the shine off the meeting. I wish a speedy recovery to Dick Harmsworth as well which was an unfortunate incident.
