| 16/05/2005 - Arena Essex - Unlimited Shootout IV Bang on 85 cars for this years Shootout, and as usual it was a quality line up. Top Granadas were the Mk 2 Limo and Mk 1 Sallon of 308 Mick Bardbury and 112 Squeeky respectively. 242 Ricky Korpiela had a fresh Series 2 XJ6 which unfortunately never race, whilst 207 John Randall, 596 Neil Bracegirdle and 600 Mark Johns all had immaculate Series 3 XJ’s and 595 Drew Bracegirdle had an equally smart XJ40. 67 Gary Greenland and 85 James Ellis both had stunning fresh P5s, whilst 231 Tony Broughton, 356 Luke Radley and 773 Mad Mouse all had used versions. 165 Herb Wilson had a ‘Dirty’ P4 and 187 Wayne Bessant topped the British entry with a fairly solid looking VDP 4LR. Onto the Yank beef and 330 Roy Laybourn returned 242 Korp’s car from last years event, whilst son 60 Steve Laybourn had a Buick, and team mate 528 Stu McLaren had a Dodge Coronet on the rad! 101 Garry Deacon returned his brothers Ford Ranchero Pick Up from Firecracker whilst 17 Malcolm Mortimer had a well smart Mercury Grand Marquis Estate. 117 Tony Green had a Chevrolet Caprice as did CAMSO’s 602 Patrick Bruurs and 612 Rob Cokx. Whilst a further yank from the CAMSO boys was provided by 38 Peter Bollens with his Chevrolet Malibu and 152 Rob Broughton had a baby Pontiac. 788 Stephen Bessant paraded a Mercury Cougar XR7 and 264 Boonie had a Cadillac Fleetwood Limo. Just one Jap in the entry and it was a proper smart Nissan 300C for welcome returnee 61 Dan Reid. Despite all of the above top car went to 332 Rolly and his Rolls Royce Silver Wraith II, which is a Silver Shadow with stretched rear doors, the first to be raced. It was on with the action and 30 or so were out in Heat 1, with 116 Wanty a non-starter. 3 Terry Peacock tried to spin the 101 Yank as 196 Midnite Joey Stuart Palmer spun out McLaren’s Dodge. 60 Steve Laybourn was the next to encounter Stu Palmer, dishing out a big head on, a move which was swiftly avenger when the latter turned round and gave Steve a shot over the back wheel. Meanwhile on the top bend 528 McLaren, 606 Terminator, 3 Peacock and 152 Broughton had all gone in, with 753 Billy Cunningham quickly adding 53 Big Ben to the pile up. 183 Paul Huner launched 602 Mr Knox into the pit bend Armco with the latter simply riding round to meet 196 Stu the Joey head on. By now not many were left running and 102 Deacon managed a feeble hit on 603 Rob Kokx whilst 552 Karl Douglas continued his good form of late taking the win. A similar field for Heat 2 with 207 Johnny Randall following in 351 Lee Woodards from the off whilst 788 5 Bellies spun 262 Kev Lee. Meanwhile the Glads/Essex Boys war was kicking off with 592 Marchant dishing out a large jacking to 174 Whipper on oppo as 262 Kev Lee jacked 330 Roy Laybourn! 600 Mark Johns used his smart XJ6 to follow in Nicky Greatex whilst 67 Greenland and 308 Bad Bradders got caught up with 330 Roy Boy. 207 Randall pounded 300 Laybourn several times as 600 Mark Johns continued his good show by turning aside 67 Gary Greenland. 330 Roy Laybourn turned it round with very little steering or drive clearly waving in the two Runners which were left going, although every time they managed to escape, partly on the shale! Whilst all this was happening 99 Richie Ahern had taken the win on his return to Arena. Again 30 or so cars for the third and final heat, with 53 Big Ben giving 264 Boonie the bone from the off, the former continued to attack Boonie’s brother 165 Herb whilst Boonie was back in the action being spun by 151 Charlie Cumber. 165 Herb gave 414 Lee Busby a huge t-bone on the pit bend as 187 Fender Bender inverted his 4R on the bridge bend. 136 Clyde sprung into action giving 99 Stevie Van Goethe a big t-bone before 414 Busby got revenge for an earlier hit by jacking Herb’s P4. 537 Bruno spun 117 Tony Green with 773 Mad Mouse jacking the latter before being clipped by the passing 151 Cumber. 999 Stevie Van Goethem then went through the drivers door of 165 Herb’s long vacated P4, and then did the same to 264 Boonie’s also empty Caddy Limo at the other end, doing more damage to himself, nice one! 483 Steve Parrish gave 117 Ribbs the bone before 773 Mouse did a full lap on oppo to give Ribbs a savage jacking, leaving the roof well up on the yank. In amongst all the action 47 Andy Davies had taken another win. Once again 30 or so came out for the Consilation, with the reds out immediately for a non-starter, but not before 152 Broughton had spun 323 Rigby, with the latter taking a huge head on from 592 Marchant, a big t-bone from 274 Matt Wright and another t-bone from 270 Kelvin Wyatt, although it was hand shakes all round, respect! On the restart 53 Garmo followed 788 5 Bellies into 165 Herb with the latter taking further punishment from 309 Shane Collins, and more still when 60 Steve Laybourn dished out an almighty head on, squashing the P4 against the Armco. 10 Paul Whiteman gave out a big jacking to Vincky, which was repayed as his CAMSO team mate 606 Ton van Haaren was straight in on Whiteman. 187 Fender Bender caught 67 Greenland on oppo, finishing his own car as 312 Rattie spun 225 on route to the win, with 225 taking a further t-bone from 752 Billy Cunningham. Anybody who had thought the Final would be roddy was proved wrong as all 35 qualifiers made it on track and 665 Stu Scarlett put in 552 Blackbuts from the off, with 753 Billy Cunningham jacking 264 Boonie on the exit of turn 4. 600 Mark Johns spun 312 Rattie with the pair getting stuck with 395 Steve Hale as 85 James Ellis followed in 308 Bradders and 264 Boonie turned it round to give 294 Lee Hughes a big t-bone, with the latter taking a pounding from 207Randall and 203 Gnasher, and 312 Ratty more than happy to banana Boonie’s Limo! With a pile up forming 53 Garmo trasher 326 Mark Woolner before taking one himself from 85 Ellis before 203 Gnashed ended a terrific train doing Ellis, with the final hits squashing Woolner more and sending him airborne! 183 Paul Hunter buried 312 Ratty and 112 Squeeky before 136 Clyde came on oppo to t-bone Squeeky and 312 Rattie also piling in, revenge from last weeks meeting I believe! 136 Clyde then handed out another bi t-bone to 177 Darren Jones before Rattie met the latter head on, and then Clyde doing the same! 49 Bill King buried 807 Murfin into Boonie’s vacated Limo, leaving 47 Andy Davies to come through for his second win of the day, followed home by 99 Ahern and 188 Fuller. A good field of 27 came back fro the Rawlins/DD with 441 Busby, 330 Roy Boy and 526 Warner, all having worked hard to get their cars back out. From the off 712 Nicky Greatrx met 300 Roy Laybourn head on with 207 Randall jacking the latter and 203 Gnashed repeating the move. 152 Broughton gave 203 Gnasher a big hit whilst 773 Mad Mouse had stopped Vincky on the top bend and 414 Lee Busby jacked 323 Same Rigby. 612 Rob Kokx met 516 Warner head on, with the latter being trashed by 61 Reidy and 85 James Ellis had trashed 712 Nicky Greatrex on the top bend, with the reds coming out for Greatex who looked to be just shaken. The race was declared with the win going to 537 Bruno and after a lengthily delay the restart got underway, including 10 Whiteman who had been hiabed onto the track with absolutely no steering, and started on oppo! 85 Ellis continued his fine form by giving 884 Mortimer a good shot, although he took a big t-bone off of 349 Pricey. 395 Steve Hale followed in 152 Broughton before turning round and giving the latter a simply huge jacking, whilst 207 Randall gave Pricey the bone. 395 Hale did 207 Johnny Randall over the front wheel finishing himself, and leaving Randall as the last car, to finish an excellent meeting!
